I spent several weeks working on this very large watercolor. It looks lovely framed – large and sumptuous. Done from a photo that I shot of Xander sitting in the hall playing with the buckles on his favorite pair of red overalls. The drips from the paint give a nice balance and add interest.
Down in the bottom right there is a spot that will bother me for as long as this watercolor exists. I was out of the paper that I normally use and made the mistake of going to Michaels to pick up one sheet of arches watercolor paper. I paid dearly for the paper, about twice what I can get it online for. Buy your watercolor paper from a reputable dealer like Dick Blick, please.
Anyway. Someone somewhere put their hands all over the paper before I got it. They must have been wearing something oily that got on the paper. A handprint showed up when I started to apply paint to the paper. A flaw in an otherwise lovely piece.
I painted these same lovely girls on the beach in white dresses five times. I think this is a pretty painting, but I definitely learned that sometimes brighter isn’t really better. When I pumped up the colors in this painting from the beach-ey version, the client was really shocked and I redid the painting again (this after Xander scribbled on the first one that I started. )
But I think it’s a successful pieces and I’m glad that I got to keep it. Honorable mention in the 2009 BAL small art competition.
Our baby at about 10 months is wearing an Eagles football jersey and cheering with a ball. When Chris got home and saw me painting this watercolor of xander with a football he stopped me. He said, “I rarely ask for your art – but just this once – will you please give me that painting when you are done? “ I was so flattered and I finished it for him. It’s hanging in his office and is not for sale.
